What is lawn aeration?
Core lawn aeration involves the removal of small soil plugs or cores out of the lawn. Other types of aerators push solid spikes into the soil without removing plugs (spike aeration). These are less effective because they can contribute to compaction.

Why should I aerate?
Over time the soil that your lawn grows on can become compacted. When soil is compacted, the pores that allow the lawn to breath and absorb nutrients are greatly constricted. This constriction not only prevents existing grass from staying healthy, but it also prevents new grass from growing by blocking roots from taking hold. By increasing the flow of oxygen, water and nutrients and promoting root growth, core aeration can provide you with a healthy and green lawn. Aerating also reduces water runoff, which improves your lawn's drought tolerance and its overall health.

What is the best time to aerate?
The best time to aerate (especially in North Carolina) is the Fall, specifically September and October. This is a time when grass is attempting to recuperate from the summer heat and is ready to consume the most nutrients. Because lawns are coming out of dormancy during these months, it is the perfect time to aerate.

What else can I do to help my lawn?
Combining core aeration with seeding and fertilizing will maximize your results. Directly following aeration, your soil has loosened and is primed to receive nutrients. Lawns may be seeded and fertilized immediately following aeration.
